Elko offers some of the finest adventure to be found anywhere in the US, Elko’s economic base consists of gold mining, cattle ranching, gaming … and tourism. That means the locals here know the meaning of western hospitality. You’ll always find them friendly; ready to recommend the best restaurant in town or their favorite place to ride.
The spring, summer and fall in Elko offer vast unspoiled opportunities for adventure. There are literally thousands of miles of trails in and out of the different National forests and Ruby Mountains. Most all of the riding is found on BLM or Forest Service roads stretching into the heart of the Great American West.
Using Elko as a base camp, ATV enthusiasts can head in any direction from town and find adventure. Whether you are looking for pine trees and flower covered meadows, sage brush flats with rock pinnacles reaching to the sky or simply cruising the ghost towns and historical sites you will find it here.
The ECVA along with numerous volunteers are in the process of establishing two major trail systems in the Elko area. The first of which is the “Merritt Mountain” trail, located north of Elko and east of Wildhorse Reservoir. The Merritt Mountain area is rich in historic mining culture as well as the beautiful scenery and abundant wildlife you will also find the old ghost towns of Patsville and Rio Tinto. The trail head for Merritt is located approximately one hour north of Elko, the abundance of wide open space offers adventure for any skill level of rider.
Spruce Mountain is the second of the two major OHV areas that are being established in the Elko area. Trail riders will be welcomed with spectacular mountain views from any location along the Spruce Mountain ridge, just east of Clover Valley. Climb through the white fir forest and mountain mahogany, explore the remnants of old mining towns and experience plenty of memorable riding. Spruce Mountain is approximately one hour east of Elko and will serve any skill of the riders who choose to venture there. Please respect the traces of America's past while visiting the Spruce Mountain area.
The Elko area offers so much in the way of outdoor recreation it is hard to imagine the endless opportunities that await you in the heart of the Heart American West.
