For those traveling east or west on Interstate 80, Elko, Nevada is the biggest city between Salt Lake City, Utah and Reno, Nevada. It also is the biggest city between Idaho to the north and Las Vegas, Nevada to the south. Yet, travelers will not appreciate all that the area has to offer if they don't take the time to get off the highway.
Among the wide open spaces can be found spectacular mountain ranges and canyons suitable for picknicking, hiking or more serious outdoor adventures.
Off the beaten track, travelers will discover hidden treasure between the vast expanses of sagebrush and juniper forests. Nevada's longest river, the Humboldt, begins here and much of the state's moisture comes from the high country in this northeastern corner of the state.
