Cowboyology, a new body of work by artist Gina Teichert, explores Western lingo and cowboy clichés during the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering. From text paintings to over the top heroines to belt buckles for rodeo losers, Teichert’s myth of the American West – much like cowboy poetry itself – is delivered with a wink.

Teichert will be serving as an artist in residence during the gathering, painting free, impromptu portraits of museum guests February 1-3. She will be taking volunteer sitters and gifting the paintings to the subject, creating a collective portrait of the cowboy poetry community. Sitters should expect to pose for 20 minutes and share a laugh, most likely at their own expense.
