Early pioneers on the California Trail had to rely on rough maps and careful observations of distance, direction, and landmarks to find their way through unknown territory. During this program Visitor Guide Dr. Steve Owens will help you explore what makes a good map, learn to use your steps to measure distance, learn to use a compass, and locate hidden markers in the field using a map, compass, and directions.
